Alternative Country

So there's this new genre of country music called "alternative country". It's got your standard country sound, but it's less "pop" and the lyrics are darker, bleaker and sometimes downright depressing. This music totally speaks to a lot of people, but it's not for everyone. What music really hits you hard, either bringing you down or picking you up?

Songs and lyrics get blamed for lots of things.

In May a coroner in Kent, England suggested American Emo band “My Chemical Romance” may have contributed to a suicide by an obsessed fan. And get this, in 2005 two researchers received a Nobel prize. Yes, the Nobel Prize for an analysis of U.S. radio play lists that revealed that as the amount of country music went up, so did the white suicide rate. Is it fair to blame a band?

Lead by Example

MTV and its reality-television crusade recently made a “documentary” about rapper T.I.’s “Road to Redemption.” T.I. has been sentenced to 366 days behind bars for federal weapons charges. In the show, the rapper meets with troubled youth headed down the same path he was on. T.I. preaches that he has learned from his mistakes, but should troubled youth be looking up to people like T.I.?

There are all kinds of rumors that T.I. will get off easy due to his celebrity status. If he doesn’t have to serve his whole sentence, what kind of message does that send to the youth he mentored?
